Bandersnatch: creating cursed video games for fun and profit

Bandersnatch is the latest instalment of sci-fi drama series Black Mirror, telling the story of a programmer in 1984 trying to write an adventure game while struggling with mysterious forces that seem to be controlling his actions. I was recruited to write some ZX Spectrum programs to tie in to the show – in this talk I’ll tell the story of how I got involved, the technical challenges of creating games for a 37-year-old computer, and how I managed not to murder anyone.

Matt “Gasman” Westcott is a hacker and musician who has been creating things on the ZX Spectrum since it was cool the first time round. He is actively involved in the demo scene community as the lead developer of the Demozoo archive site, and has rocked venues across Europe with his chiptune and keytar performances.
