SIM-cards have been a stable factor for decades as part of mobile devices and how they authenticate to the operator. SIM cards are key players in this field, but hardware vendors want their PCB real-estate back. The e-SIM revolution has arrived and secret key management has changed drastically from a physical device into a chip holding a virtual SIM-card.
In this presentation I’m going to disclose why this is evolution is happening and how consumers and vendors can now do new cool stuff. I will also share the low-level technical life-cycle of an e-SIM and where new security risks and challenges have been introduced both on a technical side and how this relates to geo-political power-playing over the global deployment.
